“What I really want to say to homosexuals…”

As I sit here typing these words to you, my heart is heavy. It is heavy because I am afraid that so many of you have been told many things by people who have a mean spirit. I can only imagine the pain that it causes you to hear insults hurled at you from every direction, for this, I am deeply sorry. I have sat and listened to so much being said about you, I finally decided that it was time for me to say something. Here is what I really want to say to you:

 1. God Loves you.

One thing that makes my blood pressure boil more than anything is to hear “Christians” talk to you or about you like you are worthless. Allow me to assure you that you are not. You are very precious in the sight of God. Genesis 1:27 informs us that God created all of us in His image. What this means is that God loves you, and has given you a higher honor than any animal, or anything else that was created. God loves mankind (all of us) enough to give us such a great honor. Please do not let anyone ever tell you that God hates you.

John 3:16 which is one of the most well known verses in all of the Bible states “for God so loved the world..” Notice the scripture didn’t say “for God so loved His disciples” or “for God so loved preachers” or.. You get the idea. God loves us all. That includes you.

2. God wants you to be in heaven.

Not only does God love you, but God wants you to be in heaven. The reason that Jesus came to this earth, and died on the cross is so that all of us would have an opportunity to escape our sinfulness and dwell with him in heaven.

Have you spent much time thinking about heaven?

  •  Heaven is a place that Jesus is preparing for those who are obedient to Him (John 14)
  • Heaven is a place where you will never cry again (Revelation 21:4)
  • Heaven is a place where everything is new (Revelation 21:5)
  • Heaven is a place where you can abide in the presence of God (Revelation 21:3)
  • Heaven is a place where valuable things such as gold are so worthless that they use them for you to walk on. (Revelation 21:21)
  • Heaven is a place that you can finally find rest. (Matthew 11:28)

The most humbling thought of all is what we read in 2 Peter 3:9 which tells us that God doesn’t want anyone of us to perish. This tells us that God wants you in heaven, He wants me. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise.

3. You are a sinner.

Since the Bible tells me that God made you in His image, and that He loves you enough to send His son to die, AND that He wants you to be in Heaven, I love you as well.

This past 4th of July my 3 year old daughter came up to me holding a large firework and asked me to light it for her. I went to take it from her hands and she began to scream “No daddy! Light it in my hands!” So, wanting her to be happy I lit the fuse and as the rocket shot toward the sky so did my daughter, sailing toward the moon with a smile on her face.. NOT!

What kind of a Father would I be if I did that? I talked to her about the dangers that would put her in, and made her let go and back away before I lit it for her. I want you to know that your Heavenly Father loves you in this same way. He would never let you do something dangerous without warning you of the danger.

Romans 3:23 tells us that all of us are sinners. That’s right, all of us. This means that you and I have the same problem, we are sinners. You may sin differently than me. I may struggle with things that you don’t struggle with, but they are still sins. Because I love you, I must tell you that you are a sinner.

Romans 6:23 tells us that the wages of sin (what we deserve because we are sinners) is death. Eternal death. What a terrifying thought! I am so grateful that the verse doesn’t end there! It continues on to say that the gift of God is eternal life. Meaning that even though we are sinners, God will still give us an opportunity (even though we do not deserve it) to have eternal life with Him in heaven.

The Bible has much to say about homosexuality. I would encourage you to look at 1 Timothy 1:10. I would also encourage you to look at 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 where homosexuals are addressed (along with other sinners) as people who will not be in heaven. I would encourage you to focus your minds on verse 11 where Paul writes “and such WERE some of you” which tells us that even the earliest church had members who were homosexuals, but overcame that temptation. If they could overcome it, so can you. You are strong, because God has made you in His image.

4. You, like me, must repent.

I told you that God loves you. I told you that God wants you in heaven. I told you that you (like me) are a sinner.

Now I must talk about repentance. Repentance is a fancy way of saying “you need to change.” For an example, If I steal things, and I decide I want to become a Christian, I cannot simply say “I’m a Christian” and continue on with my life. The Bible teaches that we must repent. In other words I have to stop stealing! If I am a liar, I must stop lying. If I watch pornography, I must stop. If I am having an affair, I must stop. If I have hatred in my heart, I must put it away. If I am neglecting good things that I know I need to do, I must stop neglecting and start doing. If I am a homosexual, I must stop that sin as well.

Your real enemy is Satan. Satan has one goal, he wants to destroy your soul (1 Peter 5:8) Satan will tell you that you cannot change. Satan will tell you that the church doesn’t want you. Satan will tell you can’t be forgiven. Satan will even tell you that there is nothing to be forgiven from, because homosexuality is normal and ok. I need you to know that Satan lies (John 8:44)

I want you to know that I love you. Even though the world, the media, and maybe even some people you know who profess to be Christians will try to beat you down and bash you because your sin is different than theirs, I will pray for you. I will pray that you will have the strength to overcome the things that temp you. I would love to visit with you, study with you, and help you overcome sin. The truth is, I will probably need you to help me overcome some things in my life as well. I want you to be in heaven with me.

I would like to close with this passage that we looked at earlier in 2 Peter 3:9-” The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”

Not only does this passage tell us that God fulfills His promises, it also tells us that God wants you and I to be in heaven. However the Bible is also clear that in order for us to not perish… we must repent. Won’t you join me on this walk with God? I am not perfect, I am a sinner, like you. Let us join ourselves together in Christ and help each other fight temptation so that one day, we will be in Heaven.

“Open Letter to Daddy’s Girl

I will never forget the morning of July 15, 2010. Your mother woke up in labor with you , and even though there was some fear in both of our hearts we couldn’t contain our excitement. Off we went to the hospital, I didn’t know what awaited me, all I knew was that my life was about to change forever.

Jacy, this may sound cliché but it is true, the moment I first held you in my arms was the happiest moment of my entire life. I don’t tell many people this, but you were the first baby I ever held. I made a decision early on that I never wanted to hold a baby, until I was holding my baby. I believe that was a great decision. I began to weep tears of joy as your mom laid you in my arms and asked me the question, “isn’t she beautiful?”

Of course you were! You were (and still are) the most beautiful little girl I have ever seen. The three of us sat in the delivery room hugging each other, and crying tears of joy. God gave us a perfect little girl to bless our lives. Your mother and I prayed together in that moment. We prayed that God would help us as parents to know how to raise you, and that above all we would lead you to heaven. This is still our constant prayer.

We know we are not perfect parents, we make mistakes. We pray that God will give us the wisdom to guide you in the right ways and to teach you His Word. Jacy you are my heart. Just a few days after you were born I had to leave for the night for a speaking engagement that was 3 hours away. I cried the entire drive there. Not because I was worried about you (you have the best mom in the world!) I was crying because the minute I left, I felt like I left my heart. Your mom told you that your daddy wanted a picture of you and this is what you didimage

your smile has always melted my heart.

We have done some amazing things in your 3 years of life. You have been to the zoo numerous times to see some amazing animals. You have 2 dogs, a fish, and a hamster because you love them so much. You have been on top of mountains, you have been in museums, you have even been in the ocean. You have cultivated relationships with your grandparents on both sides, you have developed a deep love for your 3 aunts and your uncle, and even your little cousin Joey. The way your eyes light up when you are around your extended family, make it worth the drive to see them.

While you have been to many amazing places, and done many fun things, your mother and I have been very intentional to make sure that you have the right foundation for your life. Jacy it does not matter what you have done on this earth, if you do not grow to know, love, and obey the words of your savior Jesus Christ.

That is why you have been to roughly 300 Bible classes, and worship services. That is why your mom and I spend time at home talking with you about the Bible and singing with you and praying with you. You have been to visit daddy at camp every year, you have attended weddings, you have attended funerals, you have held my hand as we knocked on doors to invite our neighbors to worship God with us. When you are old enough to read this letter I pray that you will have such a deep love for The Lord! There are times that it would be “easier” for your mom or I to just do things without you. Baby girl, I hope one day you will understand that the reason we don’t is because we love you more than anything. As you grow we want activities such as worshipping God with the church, serving others, evangelizing, comforting, rejoicing with those who rejoice, and studying the Word of God to be who you are, not just some things you do some of the time.

Words cannot express how much I love you. I learn so much from you! You remind me what it means to love unconditionally. You show me what is means to make friends with anyone with no bias. You show me the face of purity. You remind me how to take time out of my schedule and play with toys. You have taught me that even I can wear a princess crown and have a tea party. I thank you for that.

I hear so many parents who have raised children before me tell me things such as “don’t blink, or you will miss their childhood.” So I have been doing all I can to enjoy, observe and document your life. Baby girl, you grow too fast. As I sit here typing these words I fight back the tears. I know that you are healthy, growing, and normal. For this, I thank God. However, I wish you could forever be in my arms. I wish you would never get a boo boo that a kiss doesn’t fix. I wish you never had to feel the pain of a broken heart. I wish you never had to experience the sting of sin. There are so many things that I want to protect you from. Please know that even when I fail you, your Heavenly Father will not (John 10:27-30)

No matter how much you grow, how much you change, or how far you go, I want you to know you will always be my heart, my life, my baby girl.

Happy birthday princess!
